Select Rug Washing Process
Clean Rugs By The Numbers
Our entire process was designed with your special rugs in mind. We use equipment and products that are safe for wool and silk, are gentle, and are of the highest quality. We never want to expose our customers, or their rugs, to anything harmful.
Step 1:
Pre-Inspection
All rugs are thoroughly pre-inspected and photo documented prior to washing. During this time, we will answer any questions you may have, address any concerns we may have, and adjust our process if necessary.
Step 2:
Dry Soil Removal
A lot of time is spent on dry soil removal. In removing the maximum amount of particulate soil possible before ever getting the rug wet, we ensure the best possible cleaning. Adjustments during this stage are made if a rug is too fragile or weak for traditional dusting methods.
Step 3:
Dye Stability Testing
Before getting your rug wet, we test each rug for dye stability. If a rug proves itself to have unstable dyes, we are able to adjust our approach to help minimize any dye migration. You will be informed of any dye test failure before proceeding further, so that you remain an integral part of the process.
Step 4:
Pre-Conditioning
Spots and stains will be pre-treated to improve the chance of removal during the wash process, and fringes are also treated by hand to ensure maximum soil removal. Fiber types and soil levels are taken into consideration at this stage, and adjustments can be made. While we do work diligently to remove spots and stains, we can not guarantee 100% removal.
Step 5:
Cleaning
While we prefer to use a water and shampoo method whenever possible, every so often the construction of a rug, unstable dyes, or pre-existing damage may deem it risky to clean in that way. That is why we are also capable of cleaning your rugs with low moisture and dry cleaning methods. If red flags are raised during your pre-inspection, chances are we have already discussed various options with you.
Step 6:
Rinsing
We concentrate on THREE sides of the rug – the front, back, and the foundation, rinsing thoroughly to ensure total removal of soils and cleaning agents. The fringes are also thoroughly rinsed clear.
Step 7 :
Drying
Rugs needing drying are either laid flat or are hung to dry. Once again, we will adjust the process as necessary if your rug is fragile. Proper drying is essential to avoid browning, dye migration, and shrinkage. (Note: all rugs are susceptible to minor shrinkage. We can not guarantee that your rug will not show any signs of shrinkage after drying, only that we will do our very best to avoid any conditions that may cause it.)
Step 8:
Detailing & Post-Wash Inspection
While your rug is drying, we groom and set the pile, and the fringes are combed out to look their best. When your rug is completely dry, it is given a final vacuum before the post-wash inspection. An “after” photograph is then taken, and then the rug is rolled for pick-up or delivery.
NOTE: Before your rug is returned to you, let us know if you would like us to repair any pre-existing damage, re-apply a fiber protector, cut you a new rug pad, apply moth protection, or wrap your rugs for storage. We will be happy to take care of it for you!
